{"id":1064,"date":"2022-06-24T16:29:04","date_gmt":"2022-06-24T16:29:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digitaldocumentation.wustl.edu\/doc-central\/?page_id=682"},"modified":"2024-02-16T22:19:28","modified_gmt":"2024-02-16T22:19:28","slug":"links","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/digitaldocumentation.wustl.edu\/marcomm\/web-best-practices-guidelines\/links\/","title":{"rendered":"Links"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adding links to a page or content type<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Add a link to a paragraph block<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To create in-text links to other pages\/posts or websites, highlight the text that you\u2019d like to appear as the link and click on the link icon in the editor bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>To link to an external website, paste the destination URL (i.e., https:\/\/destination.com\/) into the box that appears, then click the apply icon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To link to a page within the same website, enter a term relevant to the page into the box that appears. If you do not immediately see the page\/post\u2019s name appear in the list beneath the search box, scroll down to find the page\/post you\u2019re looking for, and select the desired page\/post. The appropriate URL and title will populate the field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Add links by using buttons or other blocks<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way to add a link to a page is to use the&nbsp;<a href=\"..\/..\/blocks\/button\/\">Button<\/a>&nbsp;block, the&nbsp;<a href=\"..\/..\/blocks\/html\/photo-spotlight\/\">Photo Spotlight<\/a>&nbsp;block, or the <a href=\"..\/..\/\/blocks\/section-header-with-link\/\">Section header with link<\/a> block\u2014that automatically include a way to add a link. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Email addresses in text<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To add a clickable email address, select the text you\u2019d like to be clickable and proceed to click the link icon as if you were adding a link. (Select the text that you\u2019d like to appear as the email link and click on the link icon&nbsp;in the editor bar.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the input box, type \u201cmailto:\u201d followed by the email address. If the on-screen text is the email address itself (e.g., what the user sees and clicks on is \u201cexample@wustl.edu\u201d), WordPress will automatically convert the email address into a clickable link once you click on the link icon; it will not be necessary for you to type \u201cmailto:example@wustl.edu.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are not using the email address itself as the visible text \u2013 if you instead use the addressee\u2019s name, for instance \u2013 it is critical to add \u201cmailto:\u201d in front of the email address within the link box. Without \u201cmailto:\u201d, a broken link will be created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Linking to a PDF or other document<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We do not recommend linking to PDFs or other documents for download.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Best practices on <a href=\".\/pdfs\/\">PDF&#8217;s<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best Practices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Format for in-text links<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When adding links within text, you want to adhere to&nbsp;<a href=\"..\/..\/accessibility\/\">web accessibility guidelines<\/a>&nbsp;by making the link self-explanatory even when read out of context. Avoid using generic terms like \u201cclick here\u201d or \u201clearn more\u201d as the link text. Instead, select a word or phrase that clearly communicates its destination\u2013where the site visitor will go if they choose to click the link. Also avoid using the actual destination url as the hyperlink text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/digitaldocumentation.wustl.edu\/doc-central\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/links-to-sites.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-694\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The example above is the correct use of an in-text link, rather than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/parking.wustl.edu\/\">visit http:\/\/parking.wustl.edu.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Length of link text<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Use as few words as possible to clearly convey what the link is about.\u00a0Limit link text to 2-3 words, if possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ex. In the above example, <a href=\"#\">Parking website<\/a> is optimal versus <a href=\"#\">For more information, visit the Parking website.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.
