As a site administrator, you can grant access to your website to others, allowing you to collaborate on content creation, manage tasks or moderate comments. Here’s how to add a user:
1. Ask the new user to log into the website
- They should navigate to
http://yourwebsite.com/wp-admin/(replaceyourwebsite.comwith your actual domain name). - They should enter their WASHU Key password to log in.
- They should notify you that this step is complete.
2. Log in to your dashboard:
- Open your admin dashboard. (
http://yourwebsite.com/wp-admin/) - Enter your WASHU Key password to log in.
2. Access the users menu:
- Once logged in, you’ll be on your dashboard.
- On the left-hand side of the screen, you’ll see a vertical menu.
- Click on the menu item labeled “Users.”
3. Update the new user’s permission level:
- Find the line item for the new user’s WASHU Key ID.
- Select the user’s WASHU Key ID or “Edit” just below their WASHU Key ID.
- Scroll down until you see “Role.” Learn more about user roles.
- From the drop-down, select the desired role.
- Administrator: Has full access to control everything on the site. Use with caution!
- Editor: Can create, edit, publish, and delete posts and pages.
- Author: Can write and edit their own posts, but cannot publish them.
- Contributor: Can write and edit posts, but cannot publish them and has limited editing capabilities on other users’ content.
- Subscriber: Can only manage their profile.
5. Save:
- Click the button labeled “Update User” at the bottom of the screen.
Deleting users
- From your site’s dashboard, go to Users > All Users.
- Hover over the person’s name.
- Click Remove > Confirm Removal.
Additional notes
- By default, WordPress will send a notification email to the new user containing their login information. You can uncheck the box labeled “Send User Notification” if you want to deliver the credentials yourself.
- Remember, assigning an Administrator role grants full control over the website. Only assign this role to users you trust completely.
