Site navigation is the wayfinding system through which a user can find content on a website.

Site navigation reflects the structure of the site and is created with Pages.

Main navigation (main menu)

All WashU websites have a main navigation/menu that appears universally along the top of each of the site’s pages. Each “button” in the main menu is actually the title of a landing page. Landing pages reflect how the content on the site is organized, each one representing a groupings of related content.

The main menu also serve double duty by offering key messages prominently high up on every page. By simply reading the main navigation links, a site visitor should be able to tell a lot about your office, even if they don’t click on any of them because they reflect the types of content contained within the site.

Side Nav (side menu)

Menus automatically appear on the side of web pages in desktop view if those pages have Child Pages (subpages). Refer to the Page tutorial for more information on child pages.

Footers

Every WashU website contains contact information for the site’s division, department or unit. Additional links can be customized for specific sites.

Mobile Nav

Child pages have to be manually added to the Main menu in order for them to show up in mobile view. Refer to the Mobile Menu tutorial for step-by-step instructions.

Breadcrumbs

As a site visitor navigates between parent -> child -> grandchild pages, an additional navigational element will appear below the page title. A visitor can use this trail of “breadcrumbs” to click back through the nested levels of pages.
